Chinese drive-system supplier Gobao is preparing to move its X-Series e-bike platform toward mass production in 2027, as it seeks a larger role in the European market. Rather than offering only a motor, the company is positioning the X-Series as a complete package spanning the drive unit, battery, charging, displays, software and dealer support.
The central component combines an electric motor with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. The system is designed to adjust the gear ratio automatically, potentially reducing the need for a conventional derailleur and cassette. Gobao also highlights fast charging and connected diagnostics as key parts of the platform, although real-world performance and serviceability will depend on the production hardware and its adoption by bicycle manufacturers.
According to the company, series production of the X1 drive unit is a priority for 2027, alongside a new mid-drive motor and an expanded service network. Gobao is also developing software intended to learn rider preferences and identify technical issues before they become failures, with alerts potentially shared with riders or nearby dealers.
The announcement reflects a wider shift in the e-bike industry toward tightly integrated motor-and-gearbox systems. For trekking, cargo and SUV-style e-bikes, such platforms could simplify drivetrains and improve everyday usability. The more important test, however, will be whether manufacturers can provide dependable long-term support, spare parts and diagnostics across European dealer networks.
