TQ Opens Over-the-Air Updates for HPR40 and HPR60 E-Bike Systems

TQ now allows owners of compatible HPR40- and HPR60-powered e-bikes to install system software through its mobile app.

German drive-system specialist TQ has introduced over-the-air software updates for e-bikes using its HPR40 and HPR60 systems. After a one-time dealer software update activates the function, compatible riders can download and install future firmware through the TQ E-Bike app instead of returning to a workshop for every release.

The rollout covers more than the motor alone. TQ publishes current software versions for displays, batteries, range extenders and the Smartbox, allowing the connected system to receive fixes and performance refinements as a package. Recent releases for the HPR40 and HPR60 have addressed system stability, low-battery charge estimates and the relationship between selected assistance levels and actual motor output.

Availability is being introduced in stages and still depends on the bike and system configuration. TQ notes that some brand-specific implementations are excluded, including certain Orbea and Rotwild models using the HPR40. The company is also working on app-based updating for the older HPR50, although it has not announced a release date.

For owners, the change reduces one of the practical disadvantages of increasingly software-dependent e-bikes. Routine improvements can reach compatible bikes without repeated dealer appointments, while manufacturers gain a more direct route for correcting faults and refining ride behaviour after sale. TQ is also closing a feature gap with connected systems from larger rivals, where app-delivered firmware has become an increasingly important part of long-term ownership.
